Happy Father’s Day! Luther Vandross Video Of The Month

We’re introducing a new Video of the Month series in honor of the one-and-only Luther Vandross! Ten years ago this week, Luther released the album Dance With My Father, one of his most successful and critically acclaimed recordings. The single “Dance With My Father” would win Grammy Awards for Song of the Year and Best Male R&B Vocal Performance in 2004. Luther dedicated this song to his late father, and the music video features personal photos as well as many of his friends who contributed to it. We welcome you to submit your Father’s Day photos to us for a chance to be included in a special video montage to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of Dance With My Father. All you have to do is send us a Facebook message and upload a photo of you and your father. Deadline to submit your photo is June 12th.

Luther Vandross – Ten Years Of ‘One Shining Moment’

With the NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Championship game tonight, it’s almost time for another Luther Vandross “One Shining Moment!” Luther recorded his version of this now-classic song in 2003, and it’s played at the end of the championship game featuring a montage of March Madness highlights.

Luther Vandross ‘The Classic Christmas Album’ To Be Released October 2nd

The Classic Christmas Album series, launched in 2011 with THE CLASSIC CHRISTMAS ALBUM by Tony Bennett, rings in the holiday season with new editions by Luther Vandross, John Denver, Kenny G, Willie Nelson, and Elvis Presley. The titles will be available everywhere October 2nd through Legacy Recordings, a division of SONY MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT.

Each new collection gathers 14 or more remastered tracks spanning the career of each artist, all of whom recorded multiple holiday albums through the years, as well as occasional Christmas tunes on other albums.

THE CLASSIC CHRISTMAS ALBUM by Kenny G, for example, presents selections from his five holiday releases: Miracles: The Holiday Album (Arista, 1994), Faith: A Holiday Album (Arista, 1999), Wishes: A Holiday Album (Arista, 2002), the Greatest Holiday Classics (Arista, 2005), and The Holiday Collection (Sony 2006).

With many of their holiday albums either out-of-print, or never issued on CD, or highly collectible rarities, each new title in the Classic Christmas Albumseries is a welcome cross-section of those hard-to-find classics. Each Classic Christmas Album gathers a career’s worth of precious memories, often spanning decades, while creating new memories at the same time.

Marcus Miller Talks About Working With Luther Vandross

Renowned bassist, producer and songwriter Marcus Miller was interviewed recently by EBONY magazine, and spoke about Luther Vandross. Here is an excerpt:

EBONY: You mentioned working with Luther and Miles [Davis]. On the surface, it would seem that they have nothing in common. But Miles played trumpet with a lyrical, vocal quality, and Luther’s voice was as supple as a trumpet. Did you notice any similarities in how they made music?

MM: Absolutely. There are a lot of trumpeters who play with a lot technique. And there are a lot of singers who can riff all over the place. But Luther and Miles; they could play all the notes, but they just played the right notes. They found the notes that would affect you, emotionally… Roberta Flack, too! I mention her because, I was in her band, and that’s where Luther and I met; he was singing background for her.
