I only seriously notice his music this year (too bad I did not even realize his music in the 80s/90s when I was very young...), and realized he has passed away for nearly 6 years.

I think his singing is very unique - he would never over-did or under-did a song. When I sleep at night and listen to his songs, I get a feeling that 'Luther is telling me about a story of love/life', an emotional feeling and 'connection' that we might not get from other top/pop singers.

His personality is also very special. He has always been himself and has his own principles as a singer and as a person. That might explain why he could not go further (in terms of album sales, recognition. But of course he is already very well-established and had very steable records sales throughout his own career).

There have been 'criticisms' about his reluctance to disclose his personal life, but I think everyone is entitled privacy. As long as he is not committing a crime and/or doing bad things to harm people, he deserves the right on what to reveal and what not to reveal to the media/etc. regarding his personal life.

I also had a feeling that he might be quite a lonely person (aloneliness and loneliness are 2 different concepts though)...

I just ordered his biography online and am eager to read it!
